Washington Woman blows a .47  E-mail

Washington legal limit is .08
A woman arrested following two car crashes last week registered a .47 blood-alcohol content on a breath test — nearly six times the legal intoxication threshold and possibly a state record.

Deana F. Jarrett, 54, was taken to Evergreen Hospital as a precaution following her arrest April 11, the Washington State Patrol said Wednesday. No one was injured in the accidents.

Jarrett blew the .47 on a portable breath tester after she collided with two other vehicles in quick succession, the patrol said. A check of all 356,000 breath tests administered since 1998 in Washington turned up only 35 above .40 — and none of those was higher than .45.

The legal intoxication threshold in Washington is .08.

Jarrett did not appear to have a listed phone number, and it was not clear if she had obtained a lawyer.

ImageVILNIUS, Lithuania - Climbing into a giraffe's cage at the local zoo seemed a good idea after a few drinks. But the prank went wrong when the 1.3-ton animal flew into a rage and attacked the three student trespassers at a zoo in Lithuania on Monday night.

Ruta Greiciute, a 22-year-old student at Kaunas Technology University, was hospitalized with a broken collar bone and nose after the 9-year-old male giraffe, named Solut, attacked her.

The other students survived the incident unscathed.

ImageVIENNA, Austria (AP) - A wedding party fled from a restaurant in the southern Austrian town of Villach over the weekend without paying for their feast.

The group, consisting of the newlyweds and about 30 guests, suddenly got up before dessert and left, Austrian broadcaster ORF reported. On Tuesday, authorities succeeded in tracking down the happy couple, who claimed that the food and atmosphere had not been to their liking. For the innkeeper, that's hard to believe.

Before leaving, the group ate up plates of Wiener schnitzel, grilled meat and pork roast, ORF cited her as saying.

Pizza or Patriotism?  E-mail

"Sell pizza during the National Anthem? I quit."
Fayetteville — A Fayetteville man felt that when he had a choice — pizza or patriotism — there was no choice. He went with country over commerce.

The Crown Coliseum told Joe Waters that he had to keep passing out pizza when the national anthem was being played during events. Waters had been selling Spinners pizza at a concession stand, but he and his people would stop and stand at attention during the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Customers had to wait, and Waters said no one complained.

"We would stand aside and stand in attention and honor the playing,” said Waters, whose full-time job is being a truck mechanic.

It went that way until one night as a FireAntz hockey game was about to begin. Somebody from the coliseum said Waters could not interrupt business for the national anthem.

"I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to sell during the playing of the national anthem. It's not right," Waters said. And he quit.
